Key Cloning vs. Programming – What You Need to Know

At Locksmith Kev, I offer both key cloning and key programming services, but it’s important to understand the difference between the two, especially when deciding what’s right for your needs.

Cloned Keys: Ideal as a Spare

When a key is cloned, it’s an exact copy of your original key, including the transponder data. This means both the original and cloned key share the same identifier in your car’s system. A cloned key works perfectly as a spare, but it’s not intended for regular use alongside your original key.

Why? Using both the original and the cloned key simultaneously can confuse your car’s immobiliser system and lead to issues.

Best For: A cloned key is perfect if you just need a backup key to keep in case of emergencies.

Programmed Keys: Best for Daily Use

If you need an additional key for daily use (for example, if you and another driver both need keys), then a separately programmed key is the better option. A programmed key is registered as a unique key in your vehicle’s system, allowing you to use multiple keys without any conflict.

Why? Each key is programmed with its own transponder code, ensuring smooth use for both keys.

Cost Difference: Programming a separate key requires more time, tools, and effort, which is why it’s a different service than cloning. It usually costs £50 to £80 more per key compared to cloning, but it’s the right solution for anyone needing a key for daily use.

In Summary:

Cloned Keys: Great as a spare, but not meant for frequent use alongside your original key.

Programmed Keys: Ideal for daily use, allowing multiple drivers to use separate keys without issues.

If you’re unsure which option is best for you, feel free to ask and I’ll help guide you toward the right solution for your needs.
